Gumbo Limbo Nature CenterThe Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, situated on the Intracoastal side of the Red Reef Park in Boca Raton, Florida, is best known for its exhibits of semi-tropical birds, sea creatures, herbs, birds, fish, trees, flowers, and plants. The main features of this 20-acre (8-hectare) nature center include the natural plant association known as tropical hammock; the coastal dune; mangrove wetlands; and a sabal palm hammock. The Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex, named after one of the dominant tree species in the hammock, was established with the main aim of providing environmental education to the community through research, classrooms, and field trips. The nature Center offers a boardwalk with a 40-foot (12-m) viewing tower, guided nature-walks, and outdoor seawater tanks. Other facilities offered by the Center include interpretive displays, indoor and outdoor classrooms, visual presentations, and a butterfly garden. The marine and estuarine location of the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center makes it an ideal home of a wide variety of native vegetation communities, mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles. The most common floral and faunal species found in this region include the brown pelican, the manatee, sea turtles, osprey, and Pond Apple trees. The coastal relics, such as shell middens from the Pre-Columbian Indians; cannons; and anchors found in the area offers an extraordinary blend of living history to Gumbo Limbo.
