Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge

The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, situated in Palm Beach County, Florida, is one of over 500 national wildlife refuges administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. This 147,392 acre (596.9 sq. km.) park comprises of a large part of the northern remnant of the historic Everglades marsh habitat. The Refuge aims not only at preserving and protecting the native wildlife, but also at offering educational and recreational opportunities to the public. The major facilities offered at the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge include several miles of walking trails, bike trails, a canoe trail, fishing platform, a butterfly garden, boat ramps, observation towers, and a visitor center.

The Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge has also been designated a ‘gateway site’ for the Great Florida Birding Trail. It is home to over 257 different species of birds, alligators, and the endangered Snail Kite. The boardwalk into the bald cypress swamp offers the visitors a unique opportunity to have an up-close swamp experience. However, the rapidly growing non-native species, melaleuca tree and the Old World climbing fern, are quickly overgrowing the native flora in the refuge and are incompatible with the native wildlife.
