Old Fort Lauderdale

Old Fort Lauderdale situated on the New River in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, aims at preserving the history of the Broward County and Fort Lauderdale and is dedicated to increasing the knowledge of the past. It is best recognized for its period lighting, landscaping, historic markers, and the lush tropical beauty of an olden era. The historic buildings and the artifact collections at the Old Fort Lauderdale illustrate the community’s history, from the Pioneers of Fort Lauderdale until the present day. The major historic buildings operated by the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society include the 1905 New River Inn, the 1905 Philemon Bryan House, the 1907 King-Cromartie House, and the 1905 Acetylene Building.

The Museum of History is housed in the 1905 New River Inn, which was the first building in the Broward County to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 1905 Philemon Bryan House is a four-square Vernacular style house, while the 1905 Acetylene House is the one that produced acetylene gas to light the New River Inn. The 1907 King Cromartie House Museum was the former home of the first pioneer family in Fort Lauderdale. Old Fort Lauderdale also features the Hoch Heritage Center and the life-size replica of the first Broward County School House.

The Hoch Heritage Center is a public research library that houses the largest collection of material pertaining to the history of greater Fort Lauderdale. This library holds a compilation of over 250,000 historic photographs and several important documents, which are made available to the visitors, research scholars, residents, genealogists, and students on request. Other major collections maintained by the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society include the Stranaham Collection, the August Burghard Collection, Dr. James Glenn Collection, the subject collection, Scrapbook Collection, Wesley Stout Index, and the Newspaper Collection. Old Fort Lauderdale also hosts a number of events and programs, including schoolhouse class programs, guided walking tours of the historic district, lectures, special events, hands-on-activities for children, and guided tours of exhibits in the Museum of History.
