Ancient Spanish Monastery

The Ancient Spanish Monastery, situated on the North Miami Beach in Florida, is the oldest building in the Western Hemisphere. Established in 1141, this 867-year old Spanish monastery is a very popular tourist attraction in South Florida. It spent almost 700 years of its existence in Segovia, Spain, where it first served as a Cistercian monastery and was later converted into a stable and granary. It was disassembled in 1925 and was brought to America by the newspaper magnet, William Randolph Hearst. However, it was in the year 1954 that the monastery was restructured at its current location in Miami Beach.

Today, the Ancient Spanish Monastery is housed in the St. Bernard de Clairvaux Episcopal Church. Self-guided/guided tours of its gardens, cloisters, chapels, and interior rooms are made available to the visitors. The birdbath and the life-size statue of Spain’s king Alphonso VII are authentic pieces, dating back to the 12th century and can be viewed from the stained glass windows of the monastery.

The Ancient Spanish Monastery is also available to host receptions and weddings, both outdoors and indoors. It offers as many as seven different wedding venues and four reception areas. The most intimate of all the wedding locations at the Spanish Monastery is the ‘French Altar’. This wedding venue is designed for fewer than 10 people. The Prayer Well, on the other hand, can accommodate at least 200 people. This magnificent, ancient monastery is a “must-see’ for all those who visit Miami.
