Miami MetrozooThe Miami MetroZoo, situated in southern Miami-Dade County, southwest of the city of Miami, is the oldest and largest zoological garden in Florida. It is also the only subtropical zoo in the continental United States. Located to the west of the village of Palmetto Bay, the Miami MetroZoo is home to more than 1,200 wild animals. The zoo encompasses an area of 740 acres (2.99 sq-km), featuring more than 81 exhibits and over 1,306 specimens. The Zoo is also home to nearly 392 Inverts, 428 fishes, and 10,000-15,000 Italian honey bees. The Miami MetroZoo was established in 1948 as the Crandon Park Zoo on the island of Key Biscayne. After Hurricane Betsy devastated a large part of the land in this area, the zoo was renovated and re-opened to the public on December 12, 1981. Today, this zoo is considered to be among the top 25 zoos in the country. A major exhibit at the zoo is the 27-acres (0.11 sq-km) ‘Amazon and Beyond’. This exhibit is dedicated to the flora and fauna of tropical America and is scheduled to open in November, 2008. The main animals to be featured in this exhibit include harpy eagles, giant river otters, and the anaconda. The Fix, an episode from the second season of Miami Vice, featured the original MetroZoo aviary. The Miami MetroZoo aims at encouraging an appreciation for wildlife and conserving it for future generations. It offers a great learning experience and is a “must-see” for all animal lovers.
