The Anhinga Trail, situated to the southwest of Florida City, Florida, is an integral part of the Everglades National Park. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on November 5, 1996. It is the most-frequented trail in the park and is best known for its abundance of wildlife. Anhinga Trail starts at the Royal Palm Visitor Center, just 4 miles (6 km) from the Ernest Coe Visitor Center at the main park entrance, and follows a series of elevated boardwalks that eventually lead the hikers to the deeper waters in the Park.
The trail offers breathtaking views of the Park and is also wheelchair accessible. Hiking and wildlife viewing at dawn and dusk are the most popular tourist activities on the Anhinga Trail. This 0.5-mile (0.8 km) (round trip) self-guided trail meanders through a saw-grass marsh prairie, one of nine different habitats of the Park. Here, visitors can often spot turtles, water turkeys, White Ibis, Double Breasted Cormorant, wood-storks, alligators, egrets, herons, and anhingas. The trail features interpretive signs at points of ecological significance.
The Royal Palm Visitor Center offers bathroom as well as restroom facilities. In addition, wildlife guides are made available to the visitors at the Royal Palm store. The major attraction nearby is the Gumbo Limbo Trail that features a unique Hardwood Hammock ecosystem. Bicycling, driving motor vehicles, backcountry camping, and fishing are prohibited on this trail. Despite of these restrictions, the Anhinga Trail is worthwhile and a ‘must-see’ in the Everglades National Park.
