The spectacular Captiva Island, situated to the north of Sanibel, on the Lee Island Coast, is best known for its good lifestyle; immaculate white sand beaches scattered with ‘treasures from the sea’; awesome sunrises and sunsets; and pastel colored seashells. This beautiful island can be easily accessed from Sanibel by a shorter bridge that crosses at the popular Turner Beach. Turner Beach, the most-frequented tourist destination on the Captiva Island, extends 5 miles (8 km) to the northernmost tip of Captiva Island at the Redfish Pass. The scenic Captiva Drive starts from the small bridge at Turner Beach, runs past tropical flora, colorful bougainvilleas, and giant cactus along a stretch of sand and sea, and finally ends at downtown Captiva.
Captiva Island enjoys a subtropical climate and is a perfect holiday destination for the young and the old alike. It is home to a number of elegant accommodations, fine dining restaurants, and shopping centers. It also offers great opportunities for golfing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, bike riding, boating, fishing, and tennis. Wildlife viewing is also a favorite tourist activity here. The most common species that can be spotted in this area include dolphins, raccoons, blue herons, and different species of colorful birds. Visit to Captiva Island is definitely incomplete without tasting the local luscious fresh seafood. The major restaurants on the Island include the Bubble Room, Chadwick’s, Dolce Vita, Hungry Heron, and Key-lime Bistro.
Captiva Island is also considered to be the world’s best place for shelling. Collecting different types of shells from the beach and appreciating their use on mirror, boxes, lamps, and in craft is the most popular recreational activity on the Island. Besides, this island is also considered to be a shopping paradise. Most shops on the island are concentrated on the Andy Rosse Lane, as well as at the north end of the Captiva Drive. Antiques, hand-painted furniture, pottery, casual fashions, and beautiful gifts are some of the best-buys here. Captiva Island is one of the most romantic places in Florida and it attracts a number of couples from around the globe every year.
