Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, situated just west of Copeland, Florida, is one of the major state parks in the state. Fakahatchee Strand that features this state park is a stretch of forested swamp in Big Cypress, an integral part of Everglades. It is oriented from north to south, and measures nearly 20 miles (32 km) in length and 5 miles (8 km) in width. The Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, popularly referred to as the ‘Amazon of North America’, hosts a number of habitats and forest types, ranging from the drier islands of tropical hardwood hammocks and pine rock lands to the wetter swamps and prairies. In fact, this state park is the only place on planet Earth where the forest canopy is shared by the royal palms and bald cypress trees.
The most popular tourist activity in the park is plant and wildlife viewing. The State Park is best known for its flora and fauna, and is home to a number of plant and animal species. The most common plants found in this region include bald cypress, ferns, orchids, royal palm, and bromeliads. Among the wildlife of the park are some common species, such as the Red-Shouldered Hawks, raccoons, turkeys, owls, white-tailed deer, alligators, ducks, sand-chill cranes, bald eagles, osprey, roseate spoonbills, opossums, and vultures. The endangered and threatened species, on the other hand, include the Wood Stork, black bear, fox squirrel, Florida panther, and mink. The main facilities offered at the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park include a number of guided tours, swamp-walks, canoe trips, several miles of hiking trails, a 2000 ft (600 m) boardwalk, and the 11 mile (18 km) long Janes Scenic Drive. The Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk offers the visitors a unique opportunity to explore and understand the past of this region.
