Fort Myers

fort myers

Fort Myers, the county seat and the main commercial center of the Lee County, Florida, is one of the two main cities that constitute the Cape Coral-Fort Myers MSA. It was founded in 1886 as the governmental and historic hub of the Lee County. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Florida, attracting millions of tourists every year. Considered to be the ‘gateway’ of Southwest Florida region, Fort Myers is home to the ‘Seminole Lodge’ and ‘The Mangoes’, the winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford respectively. Both these magnificent mansions, situated on the McGregor Boulevard, are the primary tourist attractions in Fort Myers. At present, Fort Myer is also home to the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins spring training camps.

Fort Myers was actually established as a military fort in the year 1850 and was named after Col. Abraham C. Myers. The fort was abandoned in 1858 and was reoccupied by the Federal troops during the Civil War, in 1863. In 1882, Fort Myers experienced a major influx of settlers and by 1885 it was incorporated as the second largest city on the west coast of Florida. With the opening of the Royal Palm Hotel in the city in 1898, Fort Myers emerged as an internationally acclaimed winter resort. The building of the Tamiami Trail Bridge across the Caloosahatchee River in 1924 ultimately sparked the growth and development of this city.

Some of the more popular landmarks in the city include the Hammond Stadium, home to the Fort Myers Miracle baseball club of the Florida State League; the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium, a private environmental education organization featuring butterfly & bird aviaries, a gift shop, a museum, a planetarium, meeting and picnic areas, and three scenic nature trails; and the Lee County Civic Center. Fort Myers also offers great opportunities for the golfing aficionados. The Fort Myers area, including Cape Coral, Lehigh Acres, Bonita Springs, Estero, and Sanibel Island, features more than 50 renowned private and public golf courses of Southwest Florida. Fort Myers has a lot to offer to people of all ages and is certainly worth a visit at least once.
