The Henry B. Plant Museum, situated on the Kennedy Boulevard in Tampa, Florida, is a magnificent 1891 railroad resort that has been wonderfully restored and preserved. The museum has been designated a National Historic Landmark and is best known for its extensive collection of artifacts pertaining to the history of Tampa and the life and work of Henry Bradley Plant. The museum mainly aims at exploring and interpreting the lifestyle of America’s Gilded Age and the turn-of-the-century Tampa Bay Hotel.
The Henry B. Plant Museum features a number of cultural events and educational exhibits, which help the visitors to relive the late Victorian period, the early years of the City of Tampa, and the beginning of the tourist industry of Florida. This prototypical Victorian palace is complete with art treasures of the original railroad resort, the sumptuous European furniture, and the authentic Moorish revival architecture. The Grand Hall is embellished with original paint colors, beautiful Victorian furnishings, and 1891 Edison carbon filament lighting.
The original electrified blackamoors that once lit the Grand Staircase; the delicate Boulle-style cabinetry; a Parian bust of Queen Victoria; and silvered bronze busts of Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots are among the other main features of the Plant’s Palace. The Garden Room displays the unique ceramic garden seats, which were made in Germany, England, Japan, and China, and were bought by Plant on his European buying trips. The Hotel’s Solarium and its luxurious rooms are certainly worth a visit.
