lee island coast

The Lee Island Coast, situated in the Lee County, Florida, is best known for its rich history, natural resources, museums, and abundance of other tourist attractions. The Lee County comprises of Fort Myers, the islands of Sanibel and Captiva, Estero Island/Fort Beach, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, and over 100 coastal islands off the mainland. The Lee Island Coast, featuring the beaches of Sanibel and Fort Myers, is considered to be “Florida’s Tropical Island Gateway”. Owing to its immaculate white-sand beaches, lush sub-tropical foliage, and exotic wildlife, this fascinating coastal region has emerged as one of the major tourist destinations in Florida.

All the distinct areas, which constitute the Lee Island Coast, have their own unique character. The most popular area in the region is the Sanibel Island, which is linked to the mainland by a 3 mile (4.8 km) long scenic causeway. This beautiful island is internationally acclaimed for shelling and its related position known as the ‘Sanibel Stoop’. Another major attraction on the Sanibel Island is the J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which is inhabited by a large number of exotic species of plants and birds. The spectacular Captiva Island, situated to the north of Sanibel, can be easily accessed by a shorter bridge nearby. The exploration possibilities off the coast of these main islands include Cayo Costa Island Preserve, Pine Island, Boca Grande, Cabbage Key, and North Captiva.

Another well-frequented area on this island-laced coast is the Estero Island, which is best known for boating, picnicking, fishing, and longer visits to Lovers Key. The main tourist attraction on this island is Fort Myers Beach. Fort Myers, popularly known as the ‘City of Palms’, is the prime center of history and tourist activity. The main in-town attractions in this area include the Fort Myers Historical Museum, the southernmost bonded winery, Edison’s laboratory and museum, historical estates of Edison and Henry Ford, and the cruises out of the downtown Yacht Basin. The southern boundary of the Lee Island Coast is occupied by the beautiful Bonita Beach. Lee Island Coast is home to a number of nature trails, sightseeing attractions, restaurants, recreational activities, and magnificent resorts. It is a serene retreat from the hustle and bustle of the busy city life and is definitely worth visiting.
