Long Pine Key

long pine key

Long Pine Key is the most important upland area of the Everglades National park in Florida. It features nearly 20,000 acres (80 sq. km.) of Pine Rockland habitat, which is interspersed with over 120 tropical hardwood hammocks. Long Pine Key is occasionally crossed by large swaths of Everglades’ prairie, popularly known as ‘finger glades’, through which water surges during the wet season. This low-lying island is surrounded by water almost throughout the year.

The old logging roads, the ‘firebreaks’, which traverse the Long Pine Key, offer visitors a number of uncomplicated, scenic gateways off the beaten path. Besides, the pine forest around the Long Pine Key Campground also features over 28 miles (44.8 km) of connecting trails. The Long Pine Key hiking trail ends at a paved road, which leads east to the Royal Palm Hammock on the main road, or to the west to the Daniel Beard Research Center. The island’s 7 mile (11.2 km) long Nature Trail is considered to be the least-frequented and the best trail in the Everglades National Park. It allows the visitors to explore and understand the prairie, pine rock-land, and the hardwood hammock habitats. The most commonly spotted on this trail include the white-tailed deer, Florida panthers, small oak toads, snakes, bobcats, raccoons, alligators, and wading birds. Visitors are strongly advised to beware of venomous snakes, particularly the cottonmouth moccasins, while exploring the areas with standing water.

The Long Pine Key Campground is situated nearly 7 miles (11.2 km) from the park’s main entrance. It features a group site, 108 drive-up sites for tents and RVs, restrooms, sewer dump station, and fresh water fills. The nearby picnic area offers fire grates and restrooms. Other facilities available in the area include a pond for fishing and an amphitheater for winter programs. Long Pine Key is truly worth a visit and is a ‘must-see’ for all the nature-lovers who visit Everglades.
