Museum of Science and Industry

museum of science and industry

The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), situated on Fowler Avenue in northern Tampa, Florida, is a popular science museum in the city. It was established in 1962 as a small museum of science and history for both children and adults. Today, it has emerged as a major science facility and a point of tourist interest in Florida. It is partners with the University of South Florida in a number of research fellowships and is also home to the only IMAX Dome Theater in Florida.

The existing MOSI facility encompasses an area of nearly 38 acres (0.15 sq-km) and is owned and operated by the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners. The first floor of the museum houses the first public library in a science center and the famous Diplodocus Dinosaurs exhibit. The second floor, restructured into the Disaster Ville exhibit, features a Hurricane wind machine, immersive theater exhibits, and a number of hands-on-exhibits. The major exhibits on the third floor include the ‘Flight Avionics Flight Simulator and The Amazing You’ Exhibit; and ‘Our Place in the Universe: An Exhibition on Space, Flight, and, beyond’.

Other attractions at the museum include the Bio-Works Butterfly Garden, the Back Woods exhibit, the Saunders Planetarium, Kids in Charge exhibit, and the controversial Bodies Exhibit. The MOSI’s gift shop sells posters, CDs, science related items, scientific games, gift cards, and scientific books. The Museum of Science and Industry is a great learning experience, particularly for kids, and is certainly worth a visit in Tampa.
