The ‘John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art’, situated in Sarasota, Florida, was founded by John and Mable Ringling in October 1931. Designed by the renowned New York architect John Phillips, the architecture of the museum building is inspired from the Renaissance and Baroque museums and palaces of Italy. The museum’s impressive art collection, compiled by John and Mable Ringling, comprises of significant works by Veronese, Titian, Rubens, Hals, and Velazquez. It also includes several decorative arts and a collection of Cypriot, Greek and Roman antiquities from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The major attraction at the museum is the unique collection of Old Master paintings that reflects the Baroque period of the 17th century. The European, Asian, and American works of art are put on display in the museum’s permanent collection galleries. Some of the most impressive collections displayed in the Ringling Museum Complex include the Koger Collection of Chinese Ceramics, featuring more than 4 millennia of Chinese ceramics; Dr.Helga Wall-Apelt’s collection of Chinese jades, stone sculptures, and bronzes; and the collection of modern and contemporary art exhibited in the Ulla R. and Arthur F. Searing Wing of the Museum.
The Ringling Museum Complex is also home to the Ringling Museum of Art Library. With over 70,000 holdings, including exhibition catalogues, books, periodicals, and auction catalogues, this library is considered to be the largest art museum library in the Southeast United States. Situated in the new Education/Conservation Building on the south side of the Ringling Museum estate, off Bay Shore Road, the art library is a member of the Florida Library Association, the Art Libraries Society of North America, the Tampa Bay Library Consortium, and the Southeastern Library Network. The Library has wide-ranging evanescent files on artists in the Ringling collection, the Museum complex, and artist and museum files from around the globe.
