The Salvador Dalí Museum, situated on the campus of the University of South Florida in St.Petersburg, Florida, holds the largest collection outside Europe of the works of the renowned artist Salvador Dali. The Museum was established at its current location on March 10, 1982. The extensive art collection of the museum was compiled by A. Reynolds Morse and Eleanor R. Morse. Morses bought their first painting in 1942 from a Dali’s retrospective at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
At present, the Salvador Dali Museum houses an extensive collection of more than 100 watercolors and drawings; 95 oil paintings; and 1,300 graphics, photographs, sculptures, and objects d’art. The museum also houses a large archival library and 7 of the 18 masterwork paintings by Dali. The most impressive masterworks put on display at the museum include The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus and The Hallucinogenic Toreador. In addition, the museum also aims at educating the public and encouraging them to understand, enjoy, and scholarly examine the art works by Dali and other artists with a similar vision. St. Petersburg’s Dali Museum holds one of the world’s largest collections of Dali’s works and is certainly worth a visit.
