Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation

sanibel captiva conservation foundation

The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF), situated in Sanibel, Florida, primarily aims at preserving the wildlife habitat and the natural resources on and around the Captiva and Sanibel islands. SCCF owns and manages more than 1300 acres (5.2 sq. km.) of wetlands and sandy ridges on these two islands and more than 500 acres (2 sq. km.) of land on the nearby Pine Island. The Foundation offers a number of outstanding interpretive exhibits, an observation tower, nearly 4 miles (6 km) of loop trails, a native plant nursery, and a number of guided tours.

SCCF also operates a Marine Laboratory, which carries out research in areas, such as harmful algal blooms, sea-grasses, mangroves, shell-fish restoration, and fish populations. It also features a weather station, which provides current data from the station on the Sanibel-Captive Road, and a ‘River, Estuary and Coastal Observing Network’ (RECON), a unique network of 8 in-water sensors. RECON offers instantaneous readings of key water quality parameters, straddling a 100-mile (160-km) area. In addition, SCCF offers a wide range of educational programs, including classroom-based activities, boat tours, beach walks, trail walks, wading trips, and kayak tours.

SCCF also runs a Nature Center on the Sanibel Island. This Nature Center features over 4 miles (6 km) of scenic trails, a butterfly house, a touch tank, a number of exhibits, and a Nature Shop and Bookstore. SCCF’s Native Plant Nursery, on the other hand, offers landscaping and educational services, as well as a wide array of native plants for sale. Wildlife-watching is also a favorite tourist activity at SCCF. The most common species found in the area include anole lizards, gopher tortoises, marsh rabbits, rails, mottled ducks, wading birds, ospreys, grey catbirds, woodpeckers, rufous-sided towhees, and Carolina wrens. The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation has a lot to offer to its visitors and is a ‘must-see’ for all those who visit Sanibel.
