Sarasota, situated on the Southwestern coast of Florida, is the county seat of the Sarasota County and the principle city of the Sarasota-Bradenton-Venice, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to the Sarasota Bay and a number of barrier islands (keys) known for the quality of their beaches. The two major islands between the Bay and the Gulf of Mexico include the Siesta Key and the Lido Key.

The city is best known for its musical, dance, artistic, and theatrical venues. The major attractions include the Florida West Coast Symphony, the Sarasota Ballet; The Sarasota Players; Sarasota Opera; and the Florida Studio Theater. The three-week Sarasota Music Festival is yet another major attraction in the city. Sarasota also hosts the annual Sarasota Film Festival, which features independent films from around the globe.

Other major points of tourist interest in the city include the Marine Selby Botanical Gardens; the Mote Marine Laboratory, a marine research center and aquarium; Sarasota Jungle Gardens; G-Wiz Museum, a science museum; and the Ringling Museum Complex. The city is also home to a number of historic buildings, including the Bidwell Wood House, the oldest structure in the city; the Crocker Church; the Terrace Hotel; the Riverview High School; and the Sarasota School of Architecture. The Terrace Hotel has also been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
