Shark Valley, an integral part of the Everglades National park in South Florida, is a great place to see snakes, birds, deer, otters, and alligators. Located nearly 35 miles (56.33 km) west of the center of Miami, the Shark Valley is easily accessible to the public. The Shark Valley entrance to the Everglades National park on US 41 is nearly 40 miles (64 km) east of Florida Highway 29 and just 17.7 miles (28.5 km) west of Florida Highway 997. Visitors are permitted to tour this area by bicycle. Bicycles are made available for rent at the concession area.
The Shark Valley features two major roadways that leave from the parking lot and extend for a distance of nearly 7 miles (11 km). The entire loop (Tram Road), however, is nearly 15 miles (24 km) in length and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness. There is abundance of wildlife in the area, particularly during the winter season. Hiking, bicycling, walking, and wildlife viewing are the major tourist activities in the Shark valley. The most popular attraction in the Shark Valley is the guided tram tour, which features a small open-air bus that takes visitors around the loop clockwise for a minimal fee. The 2 hr tram tours have a 20 minute stop at the south end. These tours help the visitors to experience the saw-grass marsh and the diverse wildlife of Everglades.
Shark valley also offers a 45-minutes ranger guided ‘Adventure Ramble’ tour that gives visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the thrill and magic of a wetland during its most productive time. Other features of the Shark valley include the 0.5 miles (0.8 km) Bobcat Boardwalk and the 0.25 miles (0.4 km) Otter cave Hammock Trail. Shark Valley is truly worthwhile and a ‘must-see’ in Everglades.
