St. Petersburg Museum of History, situated in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, was established in 1920. It is best known for its unequivocally eclectic collection pertaining to the history of St. Pete. The museum mainly aims at collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of Pinellas Peninsula, and facilitating the appreciating and understanding of this historical area for its visitors. It offers a number of educational programs in order to promote, commemorate, and reflect the cultural heritage of the area.
The museum features a number of displays on the first Native American inhabitants, the early settlers, the railway, and the city’s development. The various artifacts, photos, and exhibits in the museum depict the significant events in the history of the Pinellas County, and range from St. Pete’s famous green benches to the fossilized footprints. Besides, the archival collection of the museum comprises of over 30,000 objects relating to the history of local businesses and tourism industry in the city. St. Petersburg Museum of History also features hands-on-exhibits of costumes, life-size replicas of streetcars, and related audio-visual presentations.
A major attraction at the museum is the Flight One gallery, dedicated to pilot Tony Jannus. This gallery features the wonderfully restructured airboat, which made the first scheduled airline flight in the U.S. on January 1, 1914. Also, World War II artifacts, including the WWII era photographs, scrapbooks, and posters, are made an integral part of the major exhibits within the museum. The photograph collection at the museum also comprises some exclusive images of the Merchant Marine training. The St. Petersburg Museum of History is a great learning experience and is a “must-see” for all those who visit the city.
