The Pier

the pier aquarium

The Pier, situated in St. Petersburg, Florida, is a popular tourist attraction in the state. It extends for over 0.25 miles (0.4 km) into the Tampa Bay and is the longest of its kind in the state. It mainly aims at encouraging the people to understand the value and frailty of the global and local environment through personal experiences, education, and research. The magnificent, inverted 5-story pyramid at the end of the pier houses a number of retail shops, elegant casual and fine dining restaurants, and an observation platform.

St. Petersburg Pier also features a small aquarium, fishing, water sports, and miniature golf. The Pier Aquarium, situated in downtown, on the waterfront, is a private, not-for-profit aquarium and marine education science center. The interactive “Fresh Fish Theater” features a number of aquatic species from around the globe, particularly from Tampa Bay. The Touch Tank Experience, the video about the Florida Red Tide, and fish feeding are among other popular tourist attractions at the Pier. The innovative education programs offered to the students and teachers give them a unique opportunity to experience the marine environment up close and personal. Besides, a variety of sightseeing boat rides is also offered to the visitors at the site.

Visitors are also given an opportunity to hear the sounds in the sea through the mobile hydrophone installed underneath the Pier. The hand-on discovery programs help the students and other visitors to explore and understand the oceans and the research and technology used around the globe, especially in Tampa Bay. The Pier also houses the life-size replica of the HMS Bounty, which was used in the filming of the 2005 adult movie Pirates. It was also featured in the 1962 MGM Movie starring Marlon Brando. The Bounty charges a minimal fee for tours.
