Bahama VillageBahama Village, situated in Old Town, southwest of downtown, is one of the most popular sections of Key West, Florida. It encompasses a 16 block area bounded by Whitehead, Fort, Southard, and Louisa Streets. It is predominantly a black neighborhood and has been named after its original residents who belonged to the Bahamian ancestry. These residents were actually the freed blacks that emigrated to Key West from the Bahamas in the 1800s and worked in sponging, fishing, and salt manufacture industries. The Bahama Village and its residents have made a significant contribution to the melting pot culture of the Keys. Located between Angela and Catherine Streets, Bahama Village has recently become one of the major tourist attractions on the island. The entrance of the Village, situated on Petronia Street in Key West, features an open-air flea market, numerous shops, as well as a number of fine restaurants. The Village is also home to the only public swimming pool in the Key West. It also features a number of popular bars and historic boxing rings, which were often frequented by Ernest Hemmingway. The Lofton B. Sands African Bahamian Museum and other art galleries are the major points of tourist interest in the Village. This tiny, tranquil village has a lot to offer and is truly worth a visit.
