Blue HoleBlue Hole, located within the Key Deer Refuge on Big Pine Key, is an abandoned limestone quarry. The ‘borrow pit” exists in the area from the railroad days, when the rock material removed from the pit was used to construct roads and the Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway on the Island. Today, Blue Hole serves as a freshwater habitat for turtles, fish, wading birds, and alligators. Feeding or molesting the alligators in the pit is strictly prohibited. Access to the Blue Hole is also made available for the disabled. As there is no inlet or outlet to the Blue Hole, its subsistence depends entirely on rainfall and the saltwater that seeps into it from the surrounding limestone. The Blue Hole features a walkway leading to an observation deck and an off-street parking area. This natural attraction is a great place for photography and is a ‘must-see’ in the Key Deer Refuge. Other main points of tourist interest nearby include the scenic Jack Watson Memorial Nature Trail, Watson’s Hammock, and the 0.1-mile (160-m) Manillo Trail Spur.
