IslamoradaIslamorada, popularly known as the “Village of Islands”, is situated in the Monroe County, Florida. This incorporated village encompasses a total area of nearly 20 miles (32 km), covering the islands of Long Key, Windley Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, and Plantation Key. It has been named ‘Islamorada’, meaning the “purple isles” in Spanish, for the abundance of violet sea snails in the area. Incorporated on November 4, 1997, Islamorada is considered to be the Sport-fishing Capital of the world. It also claims to have more fishing boats per square mile than any other place in the world. The most popular place for sport-fishing is the area is the Florida Bay, situated off the southern tip of Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The most common fish caught in the bay include the redfish, tarpon, permit, snapper, trout, and snook. Islamorada offers ample opportunities for angler and non-anglers alike. Islamorada is a major tourist destination, complete with a number of tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants, resorts, and residential areas. The Lignumvitae Key State Botanical Site, a spectacular, 11-acre (4.5-hectare) island, can be easily accessed by a 15-minute boat ride from Robbie’s Marina. Ninety-minute guided-tours of this state historic site are offered to the visitors 4 days a week. These walking tours help the tourists to explore the fascinating history of the island as a wrecking station. The Fiesta Key Resort KOA offers resorts such as the Cheeca Lodge and Spa, hookups for RVs, and numerous hotels in the $50 to $75 range. Islamorada is also home to the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base of the Boy Scouts of America. Islamorada is best known for its genuine hospitality. Elegant houses and condos are made available to those planning to stay for a month or longer, while houseboats, tents, and locally run bed and breakfasts are available for others. Located just two hours south of Miami Beach and two hours north of Key West, Islamorada is easily accessible to the public and is certainly worth visiting.
