Key Largo

Key Largo, situated in the Upper Florida Keys archipelago in the Monroe County, Florida, is the largest and the northernmost of the Keys. Formerly known as ‘Cayo Largo’, Key Largo is connected to the mainland in the Miami-Dade County by the Overseas Highway (U.S. Highway 1), which enters the island at Jewish Creek, and the Card Sound Road, which connects to the Island at the Card Sound Bridge. Over the years, Key Largo has emerged as a major tourist destination in Florida. Nicknamed as the ‘Diving Capital of the World’, this Island attracts thousands of sport-fishing aficionados and scuba divers from around the globe. It is also a prime destination for the kayakers, snorkelers, and ecotourists.

Key Largo comprises of three major census-designated places: Tavernier, located at the southern tip of the island; North Key largo, situated near the Card Sound Bridge; and the Key largo, situated 9 miles (14 km) from the southern end. The Ocean Reef Club, situated at the northern end of the Island, is a private gated community. Key Largo is home to a number of world-class resorts, clubs, restaurants, and other tourist attractions. The major tourist attraction on the Island is the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first ever underwater park in the US.

The Everglades National Park is also situated a short drive away from the main Island. The Glass Bottom Boat tours, kayak rentals, snorkel trips, ranger talks, and nature trails through the mangroves are some of the best ways to discover the beauty of Key Largo and the JP Coral Reef State Park. The water surrounding the Upper Keys bayside offers several miles of backcountry within the Florida Bay. This is perhaps the second largest attraction of Key Largo, after John Pennekamp State Park. Key Largo is a perfect holiday destination for nature lovers and is certainly worth a visit.
