Marathon Key

Situated at the mid-point of the chain of islands called the Florida Keys, Marathon Key is an excellent home base for exploring all other Keys in the area. It is easily accessible to major tourist destinations, such as Key Largo and Islamorada. In fact, it is just a few miles from the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first underwater park in the nation. Marathon Key is home to several miles of flats and a number of bridges that make superb fishing hot spots.

A major attraction on the island is the Seven Miles Bridge, which is an excellent spot for Tarpon fishing. This bridge, built during the 1980s, extends over miles and miles of flats water, arches over the blue water at a certain point, and offers the exhilaration of flat driving on the mountainless roads of South Florida. Driving over this bridge is undoubtedly the most beautiful drive one can ever take. The Gulf side in Marathon is the best place for shark fishing. Marathon Florida is also a great place for snorkeling, scuba diving, as well as watching birds as they hang around on flat waters. The sites that are popular with scuba-divers include the Sombrero Reef, the Thunderbolt Wreck, the Coffins patch, and the Adolphus Busch Wreck.

Marathon Key is also just a short drive from the Bahia Honda State Park, home to the best beach in the Florida Keys. The Pigeon Key, situated nearby, is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area. It is home to a number of historical buildings that date back to the old-railroad building days, and can be easily accessed by riding a trolley or walking the 4-mile () round trips over the bridge. Yet another major attraction in Marathon Florida is the tranquil Sombrero Beach on the ocean side of the island. It offers wide sidewalks, which serve as excellent biking paths, as well as roped-off areas for swimming. Marathon Key, located at Mile Marker 50, is the best way to explore the Florida Keys and is certainly worth a visit.
