San Carlos InstituteThe San Carlos Institute, situated at Duval Street in Key West, Florida, was established in 1871 by the Cuban immigrants with an aim of preserving the Cuban culture and promoting the freedom of Cuba. At present, this Institute is owned and operated by the Smithsonian Institution. It houses an extensive research library and a museum. The museum exhibits offer visitors a glimpse of the history of Key West and the 19th and 20th century Cuban exiles. The Institute also features a number of concerts, films, lectures, and exhibitions. Several speeches were delivered by Cuban patriot Jose Marti from the balcony of the auditorium at the San Carlos Institute. The Institute’s Opera House has also hosted a number of live performances by renowned opera star Enrico Caruso in the past. The San Carlos Institute is a prime cultural center on the Island of Key West. The Institution acquaints the visitors with the Key West Cuban story that continues to be a vital part of the city’s culture to this day.
