Bayfront ParkBayfront Park, situated on the spectacular Biscayne Bay, in the heart of downtown Miami, was restructured in the early 1980s by Isamu Noguchi, the renowned American sculptor of the 20th century. At present, it is owned and operated by the Bayfront Park Management Trust. It is best known for its lush greenery and is home to a small sand beach, a Light Tower, a cascading fountain, and a tropical rock garden and waterfall. This 32-acre (0.13 sq-km) scenic park is bordered by the Biscayne Bay on the east; the Bayside Marketplace on the north; Hotel Intercontinental on the south; and by Biscayne Boulevard on the west. The Bayfront Park also features a number of monuments, dedicated to events and people throughout history. Some of the major historical monuments in the Park include the Challenger Memorial, statues of Claude Pepper and Christopher Columbus, Veterans’ Memorial, Centennial Time Capsule, Mildred and Claude Pepper Fountain, and the Slide Mantra. The Challenger Memorial, a 100-foot (30-m) white, metal-pipe tower in the southwest corner of the park, commemorates the Challenger astronauts. It also makes insinuations to the twisting contrails of NASA’s doomed spacecraft and the double helix structure of DNA. The 40-foot (12-m) Light Tower, on the other hand, makes allusions to the full moon over Miami and the Japanese lanterns. Another impressive feature of the Bayfront Park is the set of four plaques that commemorate, respectively, the assassination of Chicago Mayor Anton Cermack; the park’s dedication; Stobo DePass Curry’s involvement in the creation of the park; and Isamu Noguchi’s contribution to the architectural design. Bayfront Park also hosts a number of large concerts, corporate events, receptions, and press conferences every year. Located next to the popular Bayside Marketplace, the park can be easily accessed by the Miami-Dade County public transportation (Metrorail, Tri-Rail, and Metro-Bus). Other major facilities within the Bayfront Park include the Bayfront Park Amphitheater, with a capacity of 10,000; the ‘amphi-walk’, the sheltered, elevated walkway surrounding the amphitheater; and the Tina Hills Pavilion with a capacity of 1000. Bayfront Park has a lot to offer and is a “must-see” for all those who visit Miami.
