Calle Ocho

Calle Ocho, Miami’s S.W. Eighth Street, is considered to be the Centro Vasco (the main artery) of Little Havana. Situated between the 12th and 27th Avenues, Calle Ocho is the heart and soul of Miami. It offers a number of authentic Cuban restaurants, such as El Pub and El Pescador. The former is best known for its fish croquetas and shrimp tortillas, while the latter serves traditional Cuban dishes in an elegantly simple atmosphere. Domino Park, Cuban Memorial Plaza, and El Credito Cigar Factory are among other attractions along Calle Ocho.

The annual Cuban-festive Calle Ocho street festival, hosted by the city, is one of the largest festivals in the world, attracting over a million visitors every year. This free street festival, sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club, offers a Caribbean Carnival feel and is an integral part of the overall Carnival Miami celebrations. During the Calle Ocho festival, different ethnic communities wear flags or colors representing their culture and heritage. The festival also features food from different countries and popular music, such as salsa, merengue, bachata, and reggaeton.

Every year, more than hundreds of street vendors and 30 stages participate in this live music festival. Calle Ocho also made its place in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1998, when over 119,000 people joined to form the world’s longest conga line. Calle Ocho always has something new to offer and is a place certainly worth a visit.
