Cuban Memorial BoulevardThe Cuban Memorial Boulevard, a two-block stretch at the corner of the 13th Avenue, in the heart of Little Havana, Miami, is lined with a number of memorials dedicated to the heroes who fought for Cuban independence. The major attractions at the memorial plaza include memorials commemorating poet and revolutionary, Jose Marti and the famous war hero, Antonio Maceo; the eternal Memorial Flame dedicated to the 94 Cuban heroes who sacrificed their lives during the foiled 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba; and the Island of Cuba Memorial. Another attraction on the Cuban Memorial Boulevard is the huge ceiba tree that stands in the center of the block. This tree is considered sacred by most Afro-Cuban religions, including Santeria. Practitioners of this religion leave offerings, bundle of clothes, and ritual sacrifices of chicken bones around the tree in hopes of receiving the blessing of the saint. To remove these offerings is considered inauspicious. The Memorial Plaza also features a bronze map of Cuba dedicated to the Cuban exiles. Other memorials in the area are dedicated to Virgin Mary and Nestor "Tony" Izquierdo. Cuban Memorial Boulevard is the center point for important community gatherings, daily socializing, celebrations, and political demonstrations. It is of great historical and cultural significance to the exile residents of Little Havana and is a place worth visiting.
