Gesu ChurchThe Gesu Church, situated in Miami, Florida, is the oldest Catholic parish in the City. It has played a significant role in the religious history of Miami and is a reflection of the growth and development of the City. For over a century, this historic church has served the humanitarian and religious needs of the community. The Gesu Church, formerly known as the Holy Name Parish, was established in 1896, with Father Ambrose Fontan, S.J. as the pastor. The current structure was established in 1925 on the site of the earlier church. It was on July 18, 1974 that the Church was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Church is well known for its religious architecture and the excellence of its craftsmanship, design, and detailing. The Gesu Parish School, formerly named as the Academy of the Sisters of St. Joseph St. Catherine’s Convent, was established in 1905 and functioned until 1982. It was completely demolished in 1983. The fourth floor of the Church once housed the Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, first established in 1961. This school was relocated to SW 8 Street in 1962. At present, the parish is staffed by the Jesuits of Antilles and its pastor is Father Eduardo “Eddy” Alvarez, S. J.
