Holocaust MemorialThe Holocaust Memorial, situated in Miami Beach, Florida, was established on February 4, 1990 by the Holocaust Memorial Committee, a non-profit organization formed by the Holocaust survivors in 1984. Designed by Kenneth Treister, the Memorial features a curved walkway at its entrance, with a black granite wall on the right and a reflecting pool on the left. The granite wall describes a short history of the Holocaust. This walkway leads into a passage that bears the names of World War II concentration camps. The passage finally leads to a circular, walled plaza that features a 42 ft (13 m) bronze arm reaching up out of the ground. This bronze arm is the centerpiece of the plaza and is tattooed with a serial number, just similar to those applied to the concentration camp prisoners by the Nazis. The Memorial also features over a hundred life-size statues of people, some scattered around the plaza, while other seeming to climb the arm. A second curved walkway is etched with the names of Holocaust victims, much like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Slain journalist, Daniel Pearl, was recently added to the Memorial as the first non-Holocaust victim.
