Little Havana

Little Havana, situated in Miami, Florida, is an ethnic enclave housing a number of Cuban immigrant residents. Named after the city of Havana in Cuba, Little Havana is the political and cultural capital of Cuban Americans. The 10 square blocks that constitute present-day’s Little Havana are the most vibrant section of town. Colorful murals; monuments commemorating the heroes of past and present; outstanding art galleries; lively storefronts; and serene restaurants in the city reflect an effervescent Hispanic Culture.

Some of the major attractions in the city include the popular café cubano, Calle Ocho, the Little Havana Restaurant, and the Maximo Gomez Park. The Little Havana Restaurant is a great place to enjoy the delicious Cuban food in an elegantly simple atmosphere. Some of the major regional favorites and house specialties listed on the menu include Shrimp-Stuffed Dolphin; roast pork with fried plantains, rice and beans; medianoche; empanadas; and sandwich cubano. Calle Ocho, Miami’s S.W. Eighth Street, is considered to be the Centro Vasco (the main artery) of Little Havana. The annual Cuban-festive Calle Ocho street festival, hosted by the city, is one of the largest festivals in the world, attracting over a million visitors every year. This free street festival, sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club, offers a Caribbean Carnival feel and is an integral part of the overall Carnival Miami celebrations.

Other major tourist attractions in Little Havana include the Orange Bowl, Paseo de las Estrellas (Walk of the Stars), the Cuban Memorial Plaza, the Flagler Greyhound Track, and the Versailles Restaurant. Little Havana has also become a magnet for the hip, the young, and the artistic. Viernes Culturales, featuring three venues of open artist studios, is held on the last Friday evening of every month. Tower Theater and an outdoor, live music stage nearby a popular local landmark. Space 742, an experimental performance arena, feature four performances of dance, music, poetry, and theater on ‘Surreal Saturday’, celebrated on the first Saturday of every month.

The most unusual attraction in the City is the former home of Elian Gonzales and the towering, inflated bright yellow sculpture at Happy Face Auto Sales. Miami River Inn, a short drive from Calle Ocho, is the best place to stay when in Little Havana. Flamenco Nights at Casa Panza; authentic Cuban eats at El Esquito; and the foods of El Salvador served at El Atlacatl; El Pub and El Pescador are among other attractions in Little Havana. Little Havana is a great holiday destination and is well worth visiting.
