VizcayaVizcaya, a National Historic Landmark owned by the Miami-Dade County, was established in 1916 by agriculturalist-industrialist James Deering. It has also been accredited by the American Association of Museums. The Vizcaya Museum & Gardens feature nearly 10 acres (4 hectares) of formal gardens, a wonderfully restructured historic village, a hardwood hammock, and a main house. It offers a serene retreat in the heart of Miami. At present, Vizcaya gardens are owned and managed by the Metro-Dade Parks. Vizcaya museum and gardens give the visitors an opportunity to experience high-society living of the 20th century. The magnificent house is best recognized for the Halloween parties that it hosts. Vizcaya also hosts the annual White Party, an AIDS fundraiser. The Renaissance festival held at Vizcaya every spring season is yet another major attraction in the city. The museum holds an extensive collection of authentic turn-of-the-century furnishings and 16th to 19th century European works of art. Some of the most impressive exhibits include early specimens of the elevator, telephone switchboard, and central vacuuming system in their original condition. The museum has hosted several significant events, including the Summit of the Americas, in the past. It has also played host to famous personalities, such as Queen Elizabeth and the late Pope John Paul II.
