The Amelia Island Museum of History, situated at the South Third Street in Fernandina Beach, Florida, is housed within the historic Nassau County Jail. It holds a number of artifacts and documents that offer a glimpse of the island’s 4,000 years of rich history and culture, emphasizing more on the history of the Nassau County.
The most impressive permanent exhibits showcased at the Museum include the Footprints in Time, featuring the great personalities that were involved in the development of the Nassau County; the Timucuam Village, dedicated to the first inhabitants of the island; Civil War and the Florida Railroad, depicting the contribution made by Florida’s great statesman, David Yulee; Nassau County, portraying the industrial development in the area; Spanish Missions of Florida; and Historic Preservation. In addition to modern exhibits, the museum also offers guests a number of educational lectures and Elderhostel programs. It also plays host to several on-site/off-site museum presentations as well as the Speakers Bureau.
The Amelia Island Museum of History is the first spoken history museum in the State of Florida. It continues its story-telling tradition through a number of historic walking tours, ghost tours, and many other docent-led tours that it offers to its visitors. These tours cater to all interests and age levels.
