The Castillo de San Marcos, situated in the city of St.Augustine, Florida, is a Spanish built masonry star fort. The construction of this fort began in 1672 and lasted for nearly 23 years. It was known as Fort St. Mark until 1784 and was renamed as Fort Marion in 1821. This magnificent historic fort is made of ‘coquina’, a limestone-like stone quarried from the Anastasia Island. It was established as a protective fortress having an amazing ability to ‘swallow’ the cannonballs. The fort has now been designated a U. S. National Monument.
Today, Castillo de San Marcos is a popular tourist attraction in downtown St. Augustine, attracting over 3500 people daily from June through Labor Day, especially on summer and holiday weekends. The fort offers visitors a number of guided-tours. It also plays host to numerous special functions such as cannon firings and historical encampments. This spectacular fort helps the visitors to have a glimpse of the unique historic past of St. Augustine, and is truly worth a visit.
