Fort Clinch State Park

fort clinch state park

The Fort Clinch State Park, situated along the Amelia River, on a peninsula near the northernmost point of the beautiful Amelia Island, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Fernandina Beach, Florida. The State Park encompasses a total area of nearly 1,100 acres (4.5 sq-km), featuring the magnificent 19th century Fort Clinch, an estuarine tidal marsh, a maritime hammock, numerous sand dunes, and plains. Fort Clinch, located at the entrance to the Cumberland Sound, is a spectacular pentagonal brick fort that was activated for the Spanish-American War in 1898. The then-abandoned fort and the surrounding area were bought by the State of Florida in the year 1935. The Fort Clinch State Park finally opened to the public in 1938.

The Park is also considered to be a ‘gateway site’ for the Great Florida Birding Trail. The main recreational activities offered at the Park include surfcasting, pier fishing, and hiking, camping, sunbathing, shelling, and birding. The other popular tourist activities in the area include swimming, wildlife-viewing, bicycling, picnicking, and beach combing. The military life of the Civil War era is re-enacted at the Fort by the Park personnel. The Fort Clinch State Park is also home to a number of animal and bird species. Among the wildlife of the park are dolphins, manatees, alligators, the rare Purple Sandpipers, and the white-tailed deer.

The Fort Clinch State Park also features a 6-mile (10-km) long hiking trail, 3.3 miles (5.3 km) of paved road, several miles of beachfront, and a 0.5 mile (0.8 km) long fishing pier. In addition, the Park features 2 major campgrounds, the Amelia River campground and the Beach campground. The former has as many as 41 campsites in an oak hammock, while the latter offers 21 campsites with a ramped boardwalk. Facilities for both primitive camping and youth camping are also made available to the visitors. Fort Clinch State Park is a perfect holiday destination and an ideal place to relax and enjoy with family.
