Halifax Historical Society Museum

halifax historical society museum

The Halifax Historical Museum, situated in Daytona Beach, Florida, is housed in the former Merchants Bank Building. The various exhibits and collections at the Museum depict the local history from 5000 B. C. to the present day. Established in 1949, the Halifax Historical Society primarily aims at preserving and interpreting the rich history of the Halifax River area, and presenting it to the public by means of impressive exhibits and educational programs.

Situated in the heart of the downtown historical district of Daytona Beach, the Halifax Historical Museum is a prime cultural facility in the city. It was established at its current location in 1984. The museum and its extraordinary collections are often considered as one of the best kept ‘secrets’ in North Central Florida. The exhibits at the museum are classified into 3 major categories: permanent, seasonal, and changing. Some of the most impressive permanent exhibits at the museum include Thomas Robert Ames, the Merchant Bank Building, the Abbey, Josie Rogers, Charles Grover Burgoyne, the Rhodes Family, the Communication Corner, and the Education exhibit.

The seasonal exhibits, on the other hand, include Vintage Christmas and Speed Weeks. In addition, the museum also offers a variety of changing exhibits, which showcase photographs, artifacts, and postcards from the extensive archival collection. Some of the most popular changing exhibits put on display at the Museum include the Models of Lawson Diggett, Artifacts of War Times, Plantation Era Tools & Hardware, the ‘Rumrunner’ Bill McCoy Collection, and the Extensive Collection of Daytona Racing Memorabilia. The Halifax Historical Museum is a privately-owned, not-for-profit organization committed to the history of the Halifax area and is truly worthwhile.
