Historic District

historic district

The Fernandina Beach Historic District, situated in the charming downtown Fernandina Beach, Florida, was first plotted in 1857 by the Florida Railroad Company. Initially, this magnificent 50-block historic district covered a total area of nearly 1500 acres (6.07 sq-km), bordered by Broome Ash, South 8th Street, South 5th Street, Date, and North 9th Street, and featured as many as 122 historic buildings. The area was further extended on April 20, 1987 to encompass an additional 970 acres (3.93 sq-km), featuring 174 more historic buildings. Owing to such a high concentration of original historic structures in the area, the Historic District was listed on the U. S. National Register of Historic Places. It was designated a U. S. Historic District on July 20, 1973.

The Fernandina Beach Historic District is best known for its Victorian-style mansions and Victorian cottages, most of which date back to the 19th century. Several magnificent homes in the district have been wonderfully restored to their original condition. The Historic District is home to the Florida’s oldest saloon. It also features a wide variety of galleries, restaurants, and elegant bed and breakfast inns.

Besides, the Center Street in the historic downtown is nationally acclaimed for the eclectic shopping opportunities that it offers. St. Peter’s Gothic Revival Episcopal Church, the Amelia Island Museum of History, Fort Clinch State Park, and the Beech Street Grill are among the more popular tourist attractions in and around the district. The Fernandina Beach Historic Beach offers a unique opportunity to relive the history of northeast Florida, and is a ‘must-see’ for all those who visit Fernandina Beach.
