Juniper Springs Recreation Area

juniper springs recreation area

Juniper Springs, one of the most popular sections in the Ocala National Forest, was established by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the mid 1930s. Today, Juniper Springs boasts of semitropical scenery not found in any other U. S. National Forest. The main recreational activities at the Juniper Springs Recreation Area include bird-watching, picnicking, snorkeling, canoeing, swimming, hiking, and camping. A 66-section of the orange-blazed Florida National Scenic Trail of the Ocala National Forest meanders through this area. Besides, the area also features a 0.75 mile (1.21 km) long self-guided interpretive nature trail adjacent to the Juniper Creek.

Canoeing is the most popular tourist activity at Juniper Springs Recreation Area. The 7-mile (11-km) long canoe, which runs down Juniper Creek, offers visitors a great opportunity to watch the forest wildlife in distinct habitats. Private canoes or rental canoes obtained from the concessionaire can also be used. However, use of rafts, johnboats, and inflated tubes on Juniper Springs Creek is strictly prohibited. Juniper Springs also features 79 campsites, provided with tents, trailers, and motor homes. These campsites offer no sewer hookups, water, or electricity. Group facilities are not available, and camping is purely on first come, first-served basis. Ample picnicking facilities, including grills, tables, and shelter, are made available adjacent to the swimming area.

Swimming in the Juniper Springs Pool and shoreline fishing for sunfish and largemouth bass are other activities enjoyed by many visitors. A concessionaire vends snacks, groceries, charcoal, firewood, ice, and gifts. The concession is open throughout the year. Other equipment and services are made available within 10 miles (16 km) to the east and 8 miles (13 km) to the west of Juniper Springs. Juniper Springs Recreation Area offers a truly unique experience and is certainly worth a visit.
