The Museum of Arts and Sciences (MOAS), situated in Daytona Beach, Florida, is one of the largest and the most popular museums in central Florida. It is affiliated to the Smithsonian Institution and is also an active member of the American Association of Museums. It is best known for its extensive collection of over 30,000 objects. The MOAS was established in 1955 as a non-profit educational institution. However, it was chartered by the State of Florida in the year 1962. The MOAS holds the finest collection of furniture and decorative arts in the Southeast, and has emerged as a premier cultural facility over the years.
The Museum of Arts and Science features a unique collection of smaller museums and galleries, including the Cuban Museum, the Klancke Environmental Complex, the Root Family Museum, the Charles and Linda William’s Children’s Museum, the Dow American Gallery, and the Bouchelle Center for Decorative Arts. The Root Family Museum holds the largest Coca-Cola ® collections in the world. The MOAS also houses a children’s center, theater, planetarium, and an elegant café.
Some of the most notable exhibits at the Museum include the most comprehensive collection of Cuban art outside Cuba, a giant ground sloth skeleton housed in the Florida fossil gallery, the world’s second largest collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia compiled by Coca-cola entrepreneur Chapman Root, a unique collection of Chinese art and Japanese Prints, and an extensive collection of decorative arts and early American furniture. The museum also features a separate place dedicated to Florida history. This gallery rotates displays from the MOAS permanent collection. The main exhibits showcased here include the ‘Early Maps’, the ‘Plantations of Florida’, and ‘Florida Pirates’.
Besides, the MOAS also owns and operates the popular Dow Museum of Historic Houses in the heart of the nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine. Also known as the Old St. Augustine Village, the Dow Museum features a series of outdoor exhibits, fine collections, and five historic houses dating from 1790 to 1910. Gamble Place, situated in the Spruce Creek Preserve, is yet another off-site exhibit of the MOAS. The Museum of Arts and Science has a lot to offer for people of all ages and is a ‘must-see’ for all those who visit the city of Daytona Beach in northeast Florida.
