The “Old Town” area is the oldest community in St. Augustine, Florida. This historic city block is included in St. Augustine’s town plan of 1572 and holds an archaeological record of a 16th century cemetery and hospital, an 18th century Spanish Colonial defense line, and an ancient St. Augustine’s bridge. Today, the Old St. Augustine Village features nine historic houses that date from 1790 to 1910.
The five impressive exhibit galleries, located among the courtyards and gardens of these historic buildings, are open to the public and are truly worthwhile. These museum galleries showcase extensive collections of museum benefactor, Kenneth Dow. The various exhibits illustrate the history of St. Augustine and Florida. Self-guided tours of the Dow House, the Spear House, the Canova House, Carpenter’s House, the Worcester House, Howells House, and the Rose House are offered to the visitors.
The ‘Old Town’ area also incorporates the site of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation reading that liberated all the slaves in Florida. The Star General Store offers visitors Florida gift items, including popular books by local authors. The main points of tourist interests in and around Old St. Augustine include the Spanish Quarter Village, Plaza de la Constitution, Lightner Museum, and the Ximenez-Fatio House. One city block and four centuries of history, Old Town area in St. Augustine is an ideal place for visitors to begin their St. Augustine adventure.
