Silver River State ParkSilver River State Park, situated adjacent to Silver Springs and the Ocklawaha River, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ocala, Florida. This Florida State Park is just a mile (1.6 km) south of State Road 40 (Baseline Road), and is easily accessible to the public. The area that constitutes the state park was bought by the state in 1985 in order to preserve the natural environment of the area notwithstanding the flourishing real estate development in the area. The spectacular Silver River runs through the center of this park. The Silver River State Park encompasses a total area of nearly 5,000 acres (20 sq. km.) and is best known for its wildlife. The various animal species that can be commonly found in the park include armadillos, deer, alligators, fox, Sherman Fox Squirrels, rhesus monkeys, Gopher Tortoises, coyotes, bob cats, and Florida Black Bears. A major tourist attraction situated nearby is the Silver Springs Nature Theme Park, which is best known for its glass-bottomed boat tours. The main recreational activities offered at the Silver River State Park include bicycling, camping, kayaking, canoeing, and wildlife viewing. The park also features a ‘cracker village’, a museum, an environmental center, a 59-site campground, 15 miles (24 km) of nature trails, and ten cabins. The park also offers easy access to the Silver River. The Silver River Museum and the Environmental Education Center at the park are owned and operated by the Florida Park Service in co-operation with the Marion County Public School System.
