Spanish Quarter Village

spanish quarter village

The Spanish Quarter Village, situated in the city of St. Augustine, Florida, is an authentic living museum that credibly portrays the life in St. Augustine hundreds of years ago. Several significant artifacts that have been exhumed in archaeological digs throughout the city are showcased at the museum. This live history museum also displays the artifacts, which were excavated from shipwrecks found off the coast.

The Spanish Quarter Village is dedicated to the people who lived and worked in this area so long ago. It encompasses a total area of nearly 1.5 acres (0.01 sq-km), featuring nine historic buildings. Some of the major attractions in the area include the Casa de Gomez, a Spanish soldier’s house, the De Mesa House, and the blacksmith’s workshop. Other significant buildings on the site include the Government House Museum and the Spanish Military Hospital. The wide, vibrant streets, serene courtyards sparkling amidst gurgling fountains, and wonderfully restored buildings at the Colonial Spanish Quarter Village make this history museum the most popular attraction in the city of St. Augustine.

The guided tours of the Spanish Quarter Village take the visitors back in time, when St. Augustine was a secluded outpost of the Spanish Empire. Interpreters in period costumes, portraying the Spanish soldiers and their families, describe the life in 1740 St. Augustine. Their occupations in carpentry, candle-making, blacksmithing, and leather-working are depicted as well by these costumed actors. On these tours, guests are given an opportunity to learn more about these trades and even try their hands on the traditional crafts. The site also features a Spanish Quarter Museum store that offers a variety of educational and historical gifts. It also houses an exciting Florida History Book Room that completes the journey into the past. This living history museum is truly worthwhile and is certainly not to be missed.
