Canaveral National Seashore, an immaculate stretch of undeveloped beach, extends from just north of Launch Pad 39B of the Kennedy Space Center to the south of the New Smyrna Beach. Co-located with the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Canaveral National Seashore was established on January 3, 1975. This 58,000-acre (230 sq. km.) national seashore is home to over 310 bird species and nearly 1000 plant species. Its 24-mile (39-km) beachfront is best known for its outdoor recreational activities.
The major tourist activities on the sea shore include sunbathing, boating, surfing, bird-watching, camping, canoeing, swimming, and hiking. The four most-frequented trails in the area include Turtle Mound, Eldora, Castle Windy, and Eldora Hammock. The major attractions nearby include the John F. Kennedy Space Center and the Mosquito Lagoon. The Mosquito Lagoon offers a safe spawning ground for the saltwater fish and is therefore, the best place to experience best recreational fishing. This piece of old Florida is a serene retreat from the hubbub of the busy city life and is definitely worth visiting.
Merritt Island, situated on the Atlantic Coast of Florida, is a peninsula and a census-designated place in the Brevard County. The northern part of the island is heavily residential, with light commercial areas. The major tourist attractions in this part of the island include the NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The central portion of the island, on the other hand, is home to a local high school, shopping district, and a library.
Over the years Merritt Island has become a commercial economic hub, with the older mainland cities of Rockledge and Cocoa Beach to the west and the crowded beaches to the east. The major landmarks on the island include the 19th century Georgiana Church and Cemetery; the Old Haulover Canal; Hacienda del Sol, a historic estate in the south; Merritt Island Barge Canal; the Merritt Island Dragon; Merritt Island Rotary Park Nature Trail and Center; Pine Island Conservation Area; and the Ulumay Wildlife Sanctuary.
