international drive

International Drive (I-Drive), situated southwest of Downtown Orlando, Florida, is the main tourist strip in the city. The first segment of I-Drive, heading north from Sand Lake Road (SR 482), was established in the 1960s to serve a Marriott Hotel. Its northern portion lies in Orlando, while the rest is in the unincorporated Orange County. The International Drive South, the recent most extension of I-Drive, lies partly in the Osceola County. The segment of I-Drive from Sand Lake Road southward to SR 536, and the section of Universal Boulevard that runs parallel, together constitute the Downtown Orange County district.

The 14.5-mile (23.3-km) long I-Drive features a number of elegant restaurants, hotels, tourist attractions, and other commercial properties. It puts the visitors amid the world’s most famous attractions and theme parks. The most popular points of tourist interest along the I-Drive include the Orange County Convention Center, Sea World, Discovery Cove, Wet ‘n Wild, Universal Studios Florida, Aquatica-Sea World’s Waterpark, and Islands of Adventure. Besides, the nation’s largest McDonald’s is located at the I-Drive’s intersection with the Sand Lake Road. Another popular attraction in the area is the fancy-looking I-Ride Trolley, which runs along most part of I-Drive. A number of helicopter rides and Lynx public bus tours also serve I-Drive.

Attractions like Pointe Orlando, Mercado Marketplace, Fun Spot Action Park, Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede, Wonder Works, and Ripley’s Believe It or Not are also situated directly on the I-Drive. The world-famous Walt Disney World Resort is located just a few minutes from International Drive. Entertainment abounds on International Drive from mid-day to midnight and beyond. It offers visitors great opportunities for fine dining, exciting go-cart racing, and shopping. The International Drive Resort Area is truly a shopper’s paradise. It features over 485 shops, designer boutiques, outlets, and malls. In addition, it is home to more than 100 hotels and resorts, as well as nearly 150 elegant restaurants. Popular tourist destinations, such as the Kennedy Space Center and Busch Gardens, are also situated just an hour’s drive from the resort area.
