Knowles Memorial Chapel, situated on the Rollins College campus in Winter Park, Florida, is one of the major tourist attractions in the city. This historic Mediterranean Revival building was constructed during 1931-1932, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 8, 1997. The magnificent Chapel is privately owned and is best known for its architecture. Designed by the renowned ecclesiastical architect, Ralph Adams Cram, the Knowles Memorial Chapel features the late 19th and 20th century Spanish Revival style of architecture. It is adorned by a beautiful bell tower and intricate stained glass windows. Besides, the Chapel’s entrance is embellished with a relief portraying a meeting between the Seminoles and the Spanish conquistadors.
Knowles Memorial Chapel was gifted to the Rollins College by Frances Knowles Warren and has been named in honor of her father, Francis Bangs Knowles, the founder of Winter Park as well as the Rollins College. The Chapel organ was built by Ernest M. Skinner in the year 1932, and was restructured by Aeolian Skinner in the mid 1950s, and again by Randall Dyer & Associates in 2002. At present, the Knowles Memorial Chapel continues to serve as the Rollins College Chapel and is managed by the pastor of the college. It plays host to a number of musical events and theatrical performances, particularly during the annual Bach Festival of Winter Park.
