The Apalachicola National Forest, situated in the State of Florida, is the only national forest in Florida panhandle. It encompasses an area of nearly 564,961 acres (2286.3 sq-km), which makes it the largest U. S. National Forest in the State. The two major Wilderness Areas in the forest include the Mudswamp/New River and the Bradwell Bay. The Apalachicola National Forest also features numerous special purpose areas, including the Fort Gadsden Historical Site, Camel Lake Recreation Area, Wright Lake Recreation Area, Leon Sinks Geological Area, and Silver Lake Recreation Area. Gaming in the Forest area is governed and monitored by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Situated to the southwest of Tallahassee, the Apalachicola National Forest was established in 1936. Today, this diverse, healthy, prolific forest is home to the world’s largest red-cockaded woodpecker population. It comprises of two spectacular rivers, the Sopchoppy and the Ochlocknee. Three most-frequented scenic trails in the forest include the 4.5 mile long Wright Lake Trail, 6 miles (9.6 km) long Trail of Lakes, and the 5.4 mile (8.6 km) long Leon Sinks Geological Area Trail. These nature trails are very popular with hikers. Other major recreational activities offered in the area include fishing, bicycling, picnicking, boating, mountain bike riding, horseback riding, swimming, and off-road ATV riding. Hunting for deer is a major activity in the months of December and January.

The Apalachicola National Forest also offers developed and dispersed camping opportunities during all the seasons. The campgrounds provides all the necessary facilities, including restrooms, picnic tables, water, and electricity. The five main designated campgrounds in the area include the Mack Landing, Whitehead Landing, Wright Lake, Hickory Landing, and the Camel Lake. In addition, a number of seasonal hunt camps and dispersed campgrounds are made available to the visitors. The Apalachicola National Forest offers a unique blend of recreational opportunities, history, cypress ponds, longleaf pine forests, and savannahs, and is certainly not to be missed.
