Apalachicola

Apalachicola, a city situated nearly 80 miles (128.7 km) southwest of Tallahassee, is the county seat of the Franklin County, Florida. It has been named after the Apalachicola tribe that first inhabited this area. The town of Apalachicola was incorporated in 1927 as West Point. It was given its current name in the year 1831, by an Act of the Legislative Council of the Territory of Florida. Sponge trade was the major industry in the town in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Prior to the development of railways in the Gulf States, Apalachicola served as the third busiest port in the Gulf of Mexico, after New Orleans and Mobile. Today, Apalachicola is the home port for a wide range of seafood workers, including shrimpers and oyster harvesters.
Apalachicola is best recognized for its rich culture and heritage. It hosts the annual Florida Seafood Festival that attracts millions of visitors to the city every year. A major tourist attraction in the town is the Trinity Episcopal Church, which was incorporated on February 11, 1837. This magnificent building is one of the oldest pre-fabricated buildings in the United States of America, and is well-known for its extra-ordinary architecture.
The local elementary school, named after the renowned botanist Alvan Wentworth Chapman, and the John Gorrie Museum are other major points of tourist attraction in Apalachicola. Apalachicola National Forest situated nearby is also an ideal holiday destination. The Apalachicola Bay is well-bordered by Flag Sand, St. George Island, Cape St. George Island, and St. Vincent Island. It is served by the AN Railway and is easily accessible. It has a lot to offer to its visitors and is truly worth a visit.
