Goodwood Museum and Gardens

goodward museum and gardens

Goodwood Museum & Gardens, situated at the corner of Medical Drive and Miccosukee Road in Tallahassee, Florida, feature nearly 16 acres of extensive, lush lawns, gardens, and numerous old live oaks. In addition to the Main House and the surrounding gardens, the property also features 13 outbuildings, a reflecting pool, and a roller rink. The Goodwood estate was established by Hardy Croom of North Carolina in the 1830s. However, after Hardy’s sudden death, the Main House was completed by Bryan Croom. The property served as a social center for many years for William Hodges, who had purchased the estate in 1925.

In 1978, Tom Hood planned for the restoration of the property as a house museum and a public park. He founded the Margaret E. Wilson Foundation, which together with the Goodwood House and Gardens Inc., took up the stewardship for Goodwood, it rich history, and a bright future. The Main House, which now functions as the Goodwood Museum, is considered to be the finest plantation house in the region. Best known for its architectural style, the structure has some of the Florida’s earliest fresco ceilings. The museum holds authentic collections and period furnishings, and the surrounding gardens are home to a number of heirloom plants and old garden roses.

The Visitor’s Center is housed in the Old Kitchen, between the Main House and the Jubilee Cottage. It houses an elegant Gift Shop that sells specialty items, including regional books, antiques, collectibles, note cards, and framed prints. The Visitor Center also serves as the starting point of all the museum tours. Goodwood Museum and Gardens also play host to personal events and meetings. It takes the visitors out of the hubbub of everyday life and introduces their senses to a turn-of-the-century setting, which is sure to enhance any event or meeting.
