John Gorrie State Museum

john gorrie state museum

The John Gorrie State Museum, situated in Apalachicola, Florida, just a block off U. S. 98, is a Florida State Park that commemorates the work of Dr. John Gorrie, a young physician who arrived in the city in 1833. Gorrie was a pioneer in developing air conditioning and had invented a machine that produced ice. He received the U. S. patent for mechanical refrigeration in the year 1851. This wonderful invention of John Gorrie later became the basis for modern air conditioning and refrigeration. Unfortunately, John Gorrie died in 1855, much before he could market his invention and see its far-reaching effects.

Today, the John Gorrie State Museum houses a stunning replica of Gorrie’s ice-machine. This outstanding model of the ice-machine was made from the specifications of Gorrie’s patent. The Museum also showcases a number of exhibits pertaining to the history of Apalachicola. Besides, it also offers a number of interpretive exhibits. John Gorrie State Museum is a ‘must-see’ for all those who are interested to explore the history of Apalachicola.
